I avoided posting about this for a while, because I’ve been harrassed by the pony fandom before and I don’t want it to happen again. But I feel a little braver now, so.
This is a gift for Pinkiepony, who recently created a post rallying other My Little Pony fans who were tired of the fandoms love of sexual abuse jokes. Since that post she (and I, and others supporting her cause) have recieved many comments saying we hate free speech, had posts edited to mock the abuse survivors who created them, even had people trying to “define the difference between sexual abuse and rape”, as if joking about one is fine and the other is too much.
It’s an unfortunate truth right now that a lot of hobby communities - gamers, anime fans, fans for shows like Transformers or My Little Pony - are not safe places. And it’s something we want to see the end of. Sexism, racism, homophobia, abuse jokes, transphobia - none of these should be acceptable in a friendly, fan environment. So why are they?
Is your exploitative humour really worth defending? Do you really believe so staunchly that you have a right to make jokes at the expense of other people? Perhaps it’s time to examine your outlook and expand your knowledge.
Important note: questions about this will not be responded to publicly. If you have a question, it’s worth checking out Pinkiepony’s blog or my pony blog to see if it has been answered already.
Thank you.
